Palau Pacific Resort launches Clam planting program

The initiative complements the green and sustainable efforts of Palau’s premier luxury resort.

Koror/Munich, June 12, 2017 – The Giant Clams are listed as threatened species under CITES, the convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. There are nine species of clams in the world and Palau is proud to be home of seven species. Clam Planting at Palau Pacific Resort

Palau Pacific Resort, Palau’s most prestigious resort, is expanding its program of sustainable measures in the pristine archipelago of Micronesia. Guests can volunteer to plant a clam in the bay in front of the resort and help replenish the clam population.

“The clams survive by photosynthesis and can become up to 100 years old. Yet, their survival is threatened by storms and natural enemies, such as fish feasting on the tasty and nourishing flesh of the clams. The clams reproduce by releasing millions of eggs in a single day, but only one percent of the offspring survives. With the clam planting program, our guests can contribute to a healthy equilibrium of the ocean and learn more about the importance of maintaining the rich biodiversity Palau is famous for,” explains Mr. Gunther Borja, Recreation Attendant of Palau Pacific Resort. The clam planting is available to guests quarterly on scheduled dates and is free of charge. The program can be requested on special occasions through the Recreation Department. The next dates for the clam planting are set for August 14, 2017, December 8, 2017, February 16, 2018 and April 22, 2018.

Orchid Nursery at Palau Pacific ResortThe Clam planting program is a perfect addition to the existing green program of the resort. Another element is the orchid nursery, home of about 8,000 plants which are used to decorate the rooms and other common areas throughout Palau Pacific Resort. 23 orchids are endemic to Palau.
